How do you track spending without an app?

Pick one place to record
Tracking works when everything lands in a single place, whether that is a notebook, a note on your phone or one spreadsheet. The method fails when records are scattered, so choose one and use it consistently.
Consistency matters more than detail. A rough record you actually keep beats a perfect one you abandon.
Capture spending close to when it happens
Write down purchases soon after they happen, while you still remember them. Waiting until the end of the week means small amounts get forgotten, and small amounts are often where the surprises are.
A short daily habit of a minute or two is usually enough.
Group and review weekly
Once a week, sort the entries into a few plain categories and add them up. The aim is not judgement but visibility, seeing clearly which categories are larger than expected so you can decide what, if anything, to change.
Common questions
Is manual tracking accurate enough?
